In my agricultural farm I intend to construct concrete bridge to a stream. As per the design by engineer, there will be two Pillars of height 9 feet, the beam length is 18 feet, width of the bridge is 10 feet.
One of my engineer friend suggested me that the pillar and beam with the slab as the single structure - monolithic - is not suitable. Instead, the beam and the slab should be placed on the pillar having narrow gap of mm between the two, so as to avoid the shock waves pass on from the slab to the pillar. Is it required? I am slightly apprehensive about the strength of the bridge as well as possibility of the slip of the slab, since there is a gap. If the pillar and the beam is made as single structure - is there any harm ? Please give your comments.
