Famous Civil Engineers of All Time That Every Civil Engineer Should Know

The field of civil engineering has been around for centuries. There are numerous people who have contributed to civil engineering and deserve accolades for their contributions. It is impossible to list every engineer who has added a great value to the industry. However, we tried to highlight several famous civil engineers and their works as every civil engineer should know about them. Here is our list of some famous civil engineers of all time who has contributed largely to this engineering field. We strongly suggest our readers not to consider this as any official declaration. This is our pick and there are lots more civil engineers who has done great works and also very famous. Let us know about your choice in the comments section so that we can update the list with more famous names.

John Smeaton

John Smeaton is the first self proclaimed civil engineer. He is often called the Father of Civil Engineering. He contributed greatly to the Industrial Revolution with his work on windmills and waterwheels. His paper, “An Experimental Enquiry Concerning the Natural Powers of Water and Wind to Turn Mills and Other Machines Depending on Circular Motion”, showed the direct correlation between pressure and velocity for objects moving in the air.

Benjamin Wright

The American Society of Civil Engineers declared Benjamin Wright the Father of American Civil Engineering. He was the Chief Engineer during the construction of the Erie Canal. After the completion of the Erie Canal, he then designed and oversaw the construction of the Delaware and HudsonCanal. Wright also was the Chief Engineer of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal.

  1. I would like to appeal your consideration of Vincent Chu in the list of famous civil engineers.

His engineering achievement has been widely reported as online news on 11 December 2012 by World Federation of Engineering Organization, an international renowned engineering organization:

Also, Institution of Engineers Singapore, the Institution of Kenya and International Society for Concrete Pavement have previously published in their website and journal on his engineering achievement and his status as Asia No. 1 Civil Engineer:

    The Institution of Kenya: http://iekenya.org/News-Detail.php?recordID=33

International Society for Concrete Pavement (p.5): http://www.concretepavements.org/Membership/Newsletter/JULY2011Newsletter.pdf

CHU Tun-hon, Vincent (朱敦瀚), a Hong Kong-based civil engineer, is renowned internationally as Asia No. 1 Civil Engineer and often dubbed as Civil Engineer of the Decade. He is the recipient of Young Engineer of the Year Award 2008 (Merit) organized by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineer and listed in 11th Edition of Marquis Who’s Who in Science and Engineering.

He has published six engineering books (e.g. “200 Questions and Answers on Practical Civil Engineering Work”) on various websites for free download. He made history by having about 80 official national engineering societies, engineering organizations and universities around the world offering to post the books on their engineering websites and highly recommending them to their members.

Up to date, the book is known to have spread to Asia (Hong Kong, Japan, Turkey, Philippines, Mongolia, Singapore, Pakistan, Vietnam, India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Indonesia), Europe (United Kingdom, Switzerland, Germany, Bulgaria, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Span, Finland), America (The United States, Canada, Argentina) and Africa (South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Ghana) and Islands (Barbados and Mauritius) as tabulated below:

Vincent Chu is indeed a very outstanding engineer and winning fame and reputation on international scale. He is indeed a role model on the global basis for young engineers to follow.
